Tablet weaving is a historic technique, dating back to the early Iron Age, used to create decorative and functional bands of fabric. It involves weaving threads together using small tablets or cards with holes in each corner.
Materials: Our weaving tablets are made from locally sourced plywood made from 100% Australian renewable radiata pine.
Size: Our tablets come in 8cm for a larger weaving shed, and 6cm for more compact use.
Designs: Our weaving tablets are made using a laser cutter, allowing us to shallowly etch them with highly precise designs. All of our weaving tablets have labels A, B, C, & D to help weavers keep track of their warp threading. An asymmetrical central design also helps the weaver see the progress of their weave at a glance.
We currently have designs based on Viking Age designs by Jonas Lau Markussen, and depictions of SCA Heraldry in Lochac. We release new designs from time to time, so check out the product gallery.
Custom Design: If you would like a set of weaving tablets with your own custom design, please contact us at bearislandtraders@gmail.com. See the product gallery for examples of previous custom work.
How to: We are currently working on our own Introduction to Tablet Weaving video, but there are many videos already available. We recommend Tablet Weaving for the Absolute Beginner by Elewys of Finchingefeld. Her video is a very thorough introduction to tablet weaving. The example pattern she uses is a bit complex, but her video teaches how to read patterns. We recommend starting with a simple one-direction woven-in pattern, such as the narrow oseberg pattern. Shelagh Lewins has a great pattern and general guide for weaving that pattern here: https://www.shelaghlewins.com/tablet_weaving/Osebe...
