Just grab your favourite yarn, warp up, and get weaving!
Backstrap Weaving Kit: This kit contains a rigid heddle, weaving shuttle, and a pair of snips.
This kit is perfect for getting started with narrow band weaving. Just use a larger rigid heddle if you want to make a wider band.
This kit is perfect for getting started tablet weaving. You can make a whole lot of interesting patterns with this historical weaving technique. Just add more Weaving Tablets to produce wider bands and more ornate patterns.
Combination Kit: This kit contains everything in the tablet weaving kit and a rigid heddle, so you can do either form of weaving.
Materials: Our weaving tablets, heddles, and shuttles, are made from locally sourced plywood made from 100% Australian renewable radiata pine.
Designs: Our tools are made using a laser cutter, allowing us to shallowly etch them with highly precise designs. All of our weaving tablets have labels A, B, C, & D to help weavers keep track of their warp threading. An asymmetrical central design also helps the weaver see the progress of their weave at a glance.
We currently have designs based on Viking Age designs by Jonas Lau Markussen, and depictions of SCA Heraldry in Lochac. We release new designs from time to time, so check out the product gallery.
Custom Design: If you would like a weaving kit with your own custom design, please contact us at bearislandtraders@gmail.com
How to: We are currently working on our own weaving videos, but there are many videos already available.
For weaving with our Backstrap Kit, we recommend Backstrap Rigid Heddle Basics: Start Weaving Handspun Bands by Long Thread Media. Her explanation and video composition is clear and straightforward.
For Tablet Weaving, we recommend Tablet Weaving for the Absolute Beginner by Elewys of Finchingefeld. Her video is a very thorough introduction to tablet weaving. The example pattern she uses is a bit complex, but her video teaches how to read patterns. We recommend starting with a simple one-direction woven-in pattern, such as the narrow oseberg pattern. Shelagh Lewins has a great pattern and general guide for weaving that pattern here: https://www.shelaghlewins.com/tablet_weaving/Osebe...
